Having braces shouldn’t completely change your brushing and flossing habits, but there are some things that will be done differently while you have your braces on your teeth. It sounds difficult, but it really doesn’t have to change your lifestyle too much.
Brush and Floss Regularly
The most important part of caring for your braces and your teeth is brushing and flossing regularly. Having braces means that it will be much easier to get food stuck in your teeth.
If you have traditional metal braces, your mouth will be full of metal brackets, wires and bands, and it’s very easy for each of these to trap bits of food. This creates plaque, which contributes to tooth decay.
Just like everybody else, it’s important that you brush your teeth at least twice a day. However, you will need to be careful that you don’t brush too hard and damage your braces.
Your dentist will be able to tell you the best way to brush your teeth while you are wearing your braces, and you might want to invest in a specially designed toothbrush that makes brushing when you have braces easier and more convenient.
Flossing can be particularly challenging for those wearing metal braces simply because the wires will prevent you from getting in between your teeth. It’s still possible to floss while wearing braces.
The trick is to thread one end of the dental floss through the wires connecting the brackets to get in between your teeth. This can be difficult, but there are special floss threaders that you can pick up at most drug stores that will make the task that much easier.
Watch What You Eat
You will be able to eat most of the foods you enjoyed before while you are wearing braces as long as they are cut up into small and easily chewable pieces, but there are certain foods that you should avoid.
Chewy candy such as taffy and caramel can be a nightmare for those with braces because of the way they can stick to wires and brackets, and hard candies can damage braces if you bite down on them. Corn can also cause problems if it is eaten off the cob, so stick to canned or frozen corn. If you must eat corn on the cob, take the time to cut it off first.
Brush Your Retainer
Your retainer should always be brushed and kept clean whenever you brush your teeth. Disinfect your retainer at least once a week with a denture cleanser such as Efferdent or Polident and a cup of warm water. Rinse your retainer off thoroughly before putting it back in your mouth.
Wear a Mouthguard
Having braces shouldn’t stop you from playing sports, but you do need to take special care of your teeth and gums. Wearing a mouthguard that goes over your braces will help protect them if there is any risk of getting hit in the mouth. Even if you are playing a sport that doesn’t normally require a mouthguard, you should still take the time to wear one.
Listen to Your Orthodontist
Finally, you should never hesitate to ask any questions about your braces to your orthodontist or your dentist. Listen to what they have to say; they will be able to give you better advice than anybody else about your braces and your teeth.
