The Paleo Diet is rather hot right now. But for the benefit of those who don’t know a thing about it yet, the Paleo Diet derived both its name and concept way back to the Paleolithic period. Yes, you read that right – back to the time when cavemen first walked the earth.
This diet revolves around the eating patters of the cavemen or the first humans. It is all about eating anything from natural to wild. If you look into the eating habits of our ancestors, they mainly eat game meat, vegetables, fish, wild fruits, nuts, and eggs. There are no grains or cereals back then because farming is yet to be discovered.
And during those times, the bodies of the cavemen are fit, healthy, and strong. But ever since the human race discovered farming, people became fat, obese, or overweight. Sadly, that’s how we are today.
Scientists can prove that since the era of the cavemen, very little has changed in our genes. Therefore, the genetics of the first Homo Sapiens is similar to what we have right now. The only thing that changed is our diet. And it is our unhealthy diet that is causing the myriad of diseases that are only discovered during this century. Those diseases weren’t present when the cavemen existed.
What the Paleo Diet Consists
Enough with the overview, let’s get right on the diet itself. To pattern our eating habits with how our forefathers do it before, we have to take out a lot of things that are deemed unnecessary in our meals.
First off, you have to get rid of all the grains. The cavemen are not farmers – they are hunters. And so they don’t have any idea what grains, sugar, or processed foods are.
The Paleo Diet strongly instructs that grains should be taken out of the diet. That means no cereals, bread, pasta, rice, and everything else made out of them. Sugar has to go too.
All foods with sugar should be stricken out of your list. Candies, chocolates, sodas, and everything else with a trace of sugar in it has to go, like all processed foods should be.
The carbohydrate requirement of your body will be supplied by vegetables instead. And what your body needs as far as sugar is concerned will be handled by your regular fruit intake. Generally speaking, the following food types are the only ones accepted in the Paleo Diet:
1. Grass-fed meat, not grain-fed meat
The Paleo Diet is strict on the idea that grains causes problems in humans. And they believe that the same happens to animals.
2. Free-range Fowl
Fowl would include turkey, hen, duck, and chicken. It’s the whole poultry collection for you, so to speak.
3. Wild Fish
You can eat fish as long as they’re not farmed. And be sure that they are not laced with toxins and mercury. You can do your own fishing to get the best caveman effect, if you like.
Eggs pertain to the outputs of the free range fowls listed above.
The fresher the vegetable are the better. And by fresh, it means that you did very little to cook them. Try not to deep fry the vegetables.
6. Natural Oil
If you need oil, use the most natural oils such as olive oil, avocado oil, and coconut oil.
The cavemen like nuts too so you have the license to enjoy walnuts, peanuts, pistachios, and the likes. But don’t overdo it. And make sure they’re roasted, not greasy.
Here is where you’ll get your carbohydrates and calories. Add yams and sweet potatoes to your diet and you’ll be all set.
